Virtual Home Camp

Page history last edited by Mike 13 years, 11 months ago

We now have a HomeCamp SIM setup on ReactionGrid, which is on OpenSim.  We are aiming to run a virtual world event alongside the main Home Camp.

ReactionGrid is already doing some great work with modelling using Pachube inputs from real life objects and we hope to have some demo environments setup for the event.

Please use this space for ideas and suggestions for involvement of the Virtual event with the Real Life event.  There is also a thread for the Virtual HomeCamp on the Google Group discussion.

Help Build the HomeCamp Sim

There is a planning event on the HomeCamp sim at ReactionGrid on Thursday 5th March 09 at 9pm GMT.  Feel free to join us for a nose around the sim or to  help plan, build and model the environment for our event.

UPDATE: Transcript of the meeting is here: http://www.gomaya.com/glyph/homecamp/HC_Planning_Mtg1_transcript.rtf (was the short url  http://is.gd/lZOs but I have added the real url to make the destination more obvious)

How to get into the HomeCamp Sim

From our grid guru: Head to http://reactiongrid.com/register.aspx (was http://is.gd/lILC but I have added the real url to make the destination more obvious) to get an account, then http://www.reactiongrid.com/Support/LoggingIn.aspx (was http://is.gd/fUMM) (URL corrected) for instructions to log in - Homecamp on North East coast.   In brief: give yourself about 15 minutes lead time. Get a login to ReactionGrid (use your real name or an avatar name), then you can use the Second Life client or the HippoOpenSimViewer, which is optimized for ReactionGrid. If you are a new user, you will arrive at a Welcome Sim. Click on the map tab, lower right, look 2 squares east and 5 north for Homecamp. Double click there on the map and you will be "teleported". There may be an avatar limit so if you cannot get in, wait and try again.

Scripting objects for the HomeCamp Sims

For the coders out there, objects can be scripted by placing a script in their contents. To get a start on Linden Scripting Language (LSL) consult the LSL Wiki http://www.lslwiki.net/lslwiki/wakka.php?wakka=HomePage .

Ideas for the Virtual Event and HomeCamp Sim

(from @dpentecost) First, good work getting the sim on ReactionGrid! Note some limits - 20 avatars and 6000 prims

It could be very handy for overflow at the conference as well as the special virtual events. Depending on sim capacity and ReactionGrid support, a video stream in-world would be great. Audio alone is a good fallback.

At the very least, two things: A Pachube feed demo, and a slideshow script on a prim to allow display of (reformatted) PPT presentations.

For those not familiar with Second Life or ReactionGrid, a tutorial here to help people register, log on, and get a better avatar than awful Ruth!

A HomeCamp t-shirt available on the sim. (designed as below, shirt dispenser on sim to come)
